VDO RoadLog Plus

4.5 Total Score
Built in printer. For smaller fleets.

The original VDO RoadLog is designed for owner operators and very small fleets. The new "Plus" version brings changes to support somewhat larger fleets. But the features are still pretty thin given the up-front price tag.

  • Built in log printer
  • Stable hardware
  • Relatively inexpensive overall

  • “Plus” is a new, untried product
  • Not many telematics features, for the price
  • Substantial up front hardware cost

VDO RoadLog Plus is the brand new generation of Continental’s regular RoadLog product. The older product is designed almost exclusively for individual owner operators and very small fleets (just a few trucks). It is a stand alone unit that does not communicate with the back office. Driver’s must put their logs onto a USB stick and hand them to office staff in person to load into the back office software. This works well for an individual driver, or two or three trucks that return to home base frequently. But of course the by-hand transfer process quickly becomes unmanageable for larger fleets.

To address the needs of larger carriers, Continental is releasing RoadLog Plus. This device has cell capability so it can communicate with the back office to send logs and other data over the air. It runs on the same RoadLog device as the older product, which is well respected and reliable. It will also continue to have the built-in thermal printer that allows a driver to quickly print off a paper log during a roadside inspection.

The RoadLog plus, like its predecessor, is designed mostly for simplicity; so its telematics features are limited. It does logs, DVIRs, GPS tracking, and IFTA mileage reporting. Future versions may include messaging and engine diagnostics, but those features are still in development. It does not provide any options for GPS navigation or document scanning. Drivers cannot at this time edit their own logs, or email them from the device. Back office tools and reports are available, but fairly basic. The updated product is just now hitting the market, but it seem to have a long way to go before it is compliant with all the new ELD specifications (data transfer methods, driver edit capabilities, etc.)

So, without many bells and whistles, the focus here is clearly on simplicity and affordability. That said, while the recurring service cost of $20/mo is on the lower side, the up front hardware cost is still around $700. That initial cost seems more in line with full telematics platforms like the Omnitracs MCP 50, not a simple compliance device aimed at smaller fleets.

Overall, the RoadLog Plus is built on solid, reliable hardware, and it has the potential to grow into a nice ELD system in the coming years. But for now the Plus is too new to feel confident about. There is a lot of work to be done before its features can compete with its other hard-wired competitors like Omnitracs, Peoplenet and Rand McNally. At this price point, we’d expect a little more bang for the buck, but we’re interested to keep an eye on the product as it comes of age in 2017.

Currently using one unit on a trial basis. Sales rep has been fantastic. We did run into one system problem that we are waiting on an answer. Apparently our unit did not handle split sleeper birth correctly (per our driver) it appears the unit did not give credit for a 2 hour break when then driver then took an eight hour break giving him the required ten hours off to restart his driving time. The unit indicated driver still had two hours to remain off duty after his eight hours.

Also we could not find any help screens on how to edit the logs if driver made an incorrect entry. The screen size also was a little small for our liking.

Must apologize, I was working with bad information from my safety department. We have been misunderstanding the way the split sleeper birth provision works since its inception. We were telling drivers that the clock would start over after they completed the second break (2/8 or 8/2) which gave them 10 total hours. Thus we assumed the VDO Roadlog was not capturing the data correctly.

Again with my tell between my leg, I should have researched this issue further before my incorrect post. Learned a valuable lesson not to trust everything you hear without first investigating yourself.

Understanding the split sleeper provision correctly now, our trial of the VDO Road log functioned as advertised and I would recommend it to other carriers in their search for a ELD solution

Hi Rich, thanks for clarifying. The 8/2 split rule is certainly complicated, and its a source of confusion for lots of people. Thanks for the updated info!

At this moment I do not recommend to go for it.
After using it almost 3 weeks. Observing device behaviour. Testing transfer data between device-back office, info on portal, transfer, speed of device reaction on live, etc.
I have concluded that it is somehow over-engineered, not quite friendly user.
The sad part it is that they DO NOT want to accept returns.
So. If you plan to spend 700-800$ , and concluding that it is not the right option for you. Feel free to buy it.

I tried one of these for 2 weeks and I concur with STEL’S review above. The support was great but unit interface seemed like Windows 95 tech. For a company that has the market in Europe I would have expected from Continental.

Have been using mine for about 2 months, have had some problems, some of my own doing and the rest on them. Went to get on the road, when I finished my dvr, I went to on duty not driving, it showed all 0’s broke out the paperlogs and started to roll and alarm sounded saying I’m in violation out of hrs. later on it started counting sleeping birth time, everything else still at 0’s. I have called twiced and left emails to get no returns on either. I just want to know if it is my unit, or they are having problems, did they sell a lot of units and out of business now? I would say don’t buy one of these units. I have about $780 in mine and I’m just a 1 trk runner. I bought another brand unit and put it in the trash. I figure their is going to be a lot of stuff out there for sale, buyer beware. Not sure what I’m going to do now, maybe the dot will give us a break………..LOL this really sucks I think my rating is a little high too!!!!!!!

Like to back walk on the above comment I made on my Roadlog eld. Talk to a live person and found out that since I didn’t log off duty, my reset was useless and that was why it was showing all 0’s. After I was taught the edit the entries the eld is up and running. They are getting hammered on calls and having trouble getting to all them. I bought mine early so I could learn how to use it, I’m a old man and not that great with all the new gadgets in the world today. I do like the fact that their is no monthly fee and can do a print out for inspection. I do like the way it works and the info it does provide. Will admit that for me it has taken awhile to figure it all out. I would say maybe better instructions would help. I will also say I was wrong and don’t have trouble admitting it I’ll go 4 stars on it

Do not buy this ELD. It does not work until they activate your account. I have waited almost a week with zero responses from VDO Roadlog. I have sent 1 fax and 2 emails. Zero response. Phone just rings busy. If you think thats bad, just wait until you see the joke of an antenna you get. Short cords. They tell you to run wires on outside of cab and through the door. Then use adhesive tape to hold the crap show all together!! Thats their instructions. Who knows if it works. May never know if they cant set it up. Look elsewhere to avoid this headache.

I have been using the Roadlog solo and it is a POS! I am pretty tech savvy and this thing is so difficult to use! The web portal isn’t easy to navigate around either, you have to export files, download files and everything should really just be a little easier to use. The device malfunctioned on day 3 and added time when it shouldn’t and all I got was jokes from tech support (after holding for an hour). I have a $750 paperweight in my office that’s for sale if anyone is interested. I wouldn’t recommend this device to anyone, not even my worst enemy.

Very disappointed with this company as they are NOT prepared to offer customer support for their product. I purchased the VDO plus unit as an owner operator and they are not responding to my request to activate an account for me to activate my unit. I have called multiple times and have been placed on hold for hours and no one answers the phone. It is clear that this company is NOT prepared to handle this product. I would not recommend this company to anyone as they are not willing to promptly handle product issues thus rendering the unit defective. I purchased the VOD plus road log and it requires that you set up a monthly account to operate this unit.

The battery isnt even correct for its holder. Just flops around loose. I pray its not a lithium battery!!. Customer service is so poor!!! I have 3 trucks that need elds. 2 out of the 3 that i ordered from VDO don’t work; one says the ignition is off when the truck is running, the other won’t even turn on. I called VDO tech support and waited on hold until i was prompted to leave my name and number, someone would call me back in 30 minutes. An hour and a half later some woman called and took my info to be on a call back list. About 30 hours later i got a call from a guy in the evening and he couldn’t help me because he said i needed a tech and they weren’t in. I said it was important, he said someone will call the next morning. Still no call. This is the worst customer service I’ve ever seen. They sure were happy to sell me the units, though. NO STARS!

Terrible experience.12 hrs in sleeper berth, 4.5 driving, 2 hrs break, 3 hrs driving. I still have 8:29 weekly duty time left, and it tells me 0 hrs left driving. Tech support nonexistent. Since so many of us can’t reach anyone in costumer service and we can’t operate without ELD, we should organize and sue the company for selling the product that does not work. This is NOT right. We are faced with fines if we don’t have an ELD, but the company that sells a crap that does not work, faces no consequences. We need to find a way to make them listen and either provide a tech support, or take their product back and return the money we paid for their crappy ELD.

Regret the purchase. The service and technical departments are nonexistent. No return calls with messages and emails. When you do get through after hours on hold you hear that I can’t answer that question, a technician will have to call you back (that was 5 days ago). The system was down for two days for supposed software enhancements. Training videos do not match the office desktop. No troubleshooting guides for when the screens go black, to boot back up the system, or when unable to logout. There are no step by step instructions to guide you through the system nor explanations. They would get negative 5 stars from me. Would rather pay a fine and install a different ELD.

Left phone number on queu for a return call they said would come in 30 minutes. Waited from 1:30PM to 6PM gave up, call came back over 10 hours later at 11:35PM … was sleeping!!!! Office closed!! Product was misrepresented at the MATS show. Was told it was self contained ( no internet) which was BS. Now have over $7000 invested in worthless equipment. If the government mandates these then they should police the providers.

DO NOT BELIEVE THE NO EXTERNAL ANTENNA IS NEEDED B.S. I have a standard unit and it constantly drops the sattelites. If you want to deal with unknown location all over you logs get the standard unit. Only a moron would believe a dash mounted antenna is superior to a roof mounted antenna. Vdo customer service is horrible. Ryder fleet told the vdo bozos they will need to return the standard unit that drops sattelites all day long. Vdo previusly refused. Takes 2-3 days to possibly here back from vdo support and you will hafta use the support due to the non working systems. Very non user friendly.

So far we are incredibly disappointed with this unit and the supposed tech support. We are a one truck operation and not super tech savvy. We ordered the item with time to spare for the deadline and installed in time. Sales took our money but didn’t inform us there would be a lag between install and being able to use the unit. We were out of compliance and waiting patiently. Days later, we received an email with the driver login. If only that was the end of it. Very difficult to get the driver and fleet key up and running. Many long hold waits later, all in which we gave up and tried the call back, we were fortunate enough to actually get a call back from John ext.2198. He was super helpful and patient. Guess what!?!? Still unable to use it!!! Does not turn on with ignition, does not stay on, does not begin tracking time. Now waiting on hold again for the third time today as I listen to the awful music for 44 minutes. Not sure when we will be up and running with it. So frustrating!

Then called back at 3pm on old for another 2 hours to be told that they are only a call center. VDO is on Vacation this week and next. They were given a week training course to help out all of these calls they knew would be comings VDO you failed your customers, and dealers.

****side note, when your fueling it defaults at 300gallons. Hope you don’t put only 15 gallons in or have a f550. You’ll be pushing that damn button 285times. It wont let you change the default amount, and it won’t let you just hold it down. This thing is a POS!

Wow what a nightmare. OK, they had to know how many unregistered units were out there, and how many people were probably going to call. They claim they were totally unprepared. First, they do not make the fact that you have to register the key obvious, second, with a promised 48 hour turn around time it took them 8 days to get back to me with the data, third, the software didn’t work, fourth, after waiting on hold I was put in the 30 minute call back cue 3 times, once it took 15 hours, once 1 hour, once they never called back, fifth, you couldn’t see the screens on their how to video. Really? What good is that? Tonight, after working since 12/19 to register the unit, I think it’s finally done, though I’ve got to say the tec support guy sounded, and also said, he was bored out of his mind. Couldn’t get my husband to try it, though. After all this, he completely believes it will never work. Oh yes, and the Kenworth Dealer in Dayton Ohio that sold us this wouldn’t stand behind it, and told us his dealer couldn’t help us either. The dealer only sells the unit, he doesn’t know anything about them. Truly ugly

Got nowhere with VDO tech system for over a month. It was finally determined to be a tier 2 issue (whatever that meant) 2 weeks into the constant waiting on hold. Got a return call from a tier 2 agent about 5 days later just to let me know system was down for maintenance…..no return call or responses to my messages after that. Boxed the unit up Jan 2, dealer I bought it from said they’ll credit my account. So…i ordered a different company’s eld on Dec 29, was at my place of business on jan2, made 2 phone calls to their tech dept (less than 7 minutes wait each time) and the unit was up and running correctly the afternoon of Jan 3.

Okay folks……gonna give you the backdoor into VDO to get your call answered on first try. I guarantee if you call the VDO SALES phone line they will answer during business hours. Listen to and follow prompts to get to sales. Call their sales department as they have adequate help in that department. Salesman “Chris” was able to get me a level 2 tech and solve one issue that no one else had a clue about. Be sure to tell them how bad the support center has been if that was your experience. ALSO….when entering fuel gallons hold the button down continously to rapidly decrease gallons. GOOD LUCK.

I was using jj kellers system for over a year. Like all elds it had it’s issues but wasn’t so bad that I tossed it. Then they forced an update on Dec. 18th and that’s when the shit hit the fan, and I made the switch to VDO ROADLOG.

I researched many elds and cost vs usability and customer relations. Along with back end data.

VDO ROADLOG is by far the best I’ve seen for the cost.

The first week I ran with it I got 2 level 3 inspections. The two officers administering the inspections loved the printout logs, and it was the first time that came across the VDO system and were curious, so I showed them the system and wowed them. I passed my inspections. After they seen the system, and seen the first couple days of print outs they stopped looking at the logs and moved on to the other paper work.

The biggest issues I’ve had with the unit itself is I didn’t really look into any training material, I jumped in and started my own hands on training. It’s so simple and easy to use and figure out.

The back end there is some work that needs to be done but they are constantly working on it.

I used to be a systems admin, and web developer. I have offered VDO my input and they gladly accept it and apply it of it makes sense.

Yes they’re customer service may be hard to reach sometimes. But so is every other eld company.

Every one of them are so incredibly busy it would roll your head.

I agree the screen is small but it’s fine until you use the on screen keyboard. I have skinny fingers and it’s hard to use.

The solution is to use the tip of a pen or a stylus, it works great.

I love this eld, and the dot officers love it too, makes they’re job easier and looks better on you.

Bryon Stoll, maybe you should start your own tech service for all of us! Because honestly, this ELD is a piece of s–t. Customer service is a joke. We have used it for 3 weeks. For 3 weeks we have had violations where there were none. Customer Service is baffled. And when driver logs off, it goes to OFF Frickin DUTY! Never Sleeper Berth. Don’t know why. We have Solo. I don’t make my driver log in his fuel. I think he has enough to deal with. There is no videos that cover any of the problems we have had. There is no help on how to correct the logs. Customer Service told me all DOT want is to know how many hours you’ve worked, how many left. And to top it off, to order these itsy bitsy rolls of paper, they charge you $30.00 for shipping! And I only ordered 4 rolls!

I have been using the roadlog for a year now , the set up was relatively easy , tho i had to call support and ask some questions , but once set up the unit is super easy to use , and the data transfer from the machine to computer is easy too , the computer adds it all automaticaly , and stores everything needed for audit . I like to use the roadlog , gives me personal convenience provision . I have it in volvo is good product . Dot pulled over they like it too , no ticket since roadlog .

Purchased devices online , had them set up by the customer service , plug and play , i like the fact that i didnt need to pay anyone to install these and there is no monthly fee . What that means is that i dont have worry about it no more , no contracts no payments no fees no nothing . Just put it on dash and plug it , insert fleet key and it was good, everything was done with few simple prompts . its easy to use , drivers like it too , great standalone device . Works flawlessly.

We have been using this device for quite some time. We have tried 4 other devices prior and have found it to be easy and convenient for the drivers. There have been a few system glitches but not anything that was not handled quickly. The devices are also easily replaced under the warranty and can be fixed within 24 hours just by using a different device in the truck and sending the other one back under warranty. The Portal is very simple without so many bells and whistles it makes it hard to know what to use for what application. I have grown to really like this program compared to the other devices we have used. Our drivers also seem very pleased with the simplicity of the program. Even when the device goes out of the cell service area it continues to record in the truck and that is ultimately what we need the system to do.

Absolutely the worst and most user un-friendly electronic devices I have EVER owned. Customer service is condescending and useless. The list of problems is endless. Calls to customer service are required weekly, if not daily.
And the price? Basic price is listed in 3 year cost. Add in fleet/driver key(s). Mounting bracket. (Yes, really. It comes with screws but no bracket). “Y” cable to adapt to truck. Had mine installed at dealer. So, now it is over $1,500 not counting the defective one that had to be uninstalled and reinstalling replacement. Getting told to have truck dealer hook into ecm because malfunctions are the engine’s fault.
Add it all up with my time list and the $5,000 mark is not far away.
STAY AWAY. They need to be decertified.
